In practice, its day-to-day operations rely on a long tail of minor subordinates—messengers, lookouts, information brokers—who never get more than a line of dialogue. Informant Two falls squarely into this category: a functional role rather than a fully realized individual. Their job is to feed low-grade intelligence into the chain of command, the kind of mundane street-level data that keeps the organization's outer shell looking active.

What makes characters at this level narratively interesting is not their own agency but the lens through which Cid views them. Every brief interaction—handing over a folded note, nodding in a dim alley, receiving a vague instruction—is filtered through Cid's internal monologue, where it becomes proof of their unshakeable devotion and hidden genius. Informant Two, therefore, exists in a kind of narrative limbo: a real person going about a small task, simultaneously a fully realized (and wrong) character in Cid's head.

This dynamic is a recurring structural joke in the series. The Shadow Garden's 'power' is, to a large degree, a collective delusion in which Cid is the only true believer. The lower the rank, the more the gap between Cid's perception and reality widens, and Informant Two sits near the bottom of that spectrum.

In Their Own Story

The rain had not stopped for three days. Informant Two sat in the back booth of a noodle shop on the 4th Street market, a folded slip of paper tucked under a saucer of cold broth. The information was unremarkable: a merchant had shifted his delivery route, a guard rotation at the eastern gate was two hours late. Nothing that would topple a kingdom. Nothing that would earn a name in any chronicle.

Across the city, in a room that smelled of old books and cold tea, Cid Kagenou was already composing a eulogy for the informant's 'fearless sacrifice.' He had not, in fact, spoken to Informant Two at all. The slip of paper had been left at a dead-drop by a courier he had never met. But in the architecture of his mind, the chain of loyalty was complete, the devotion absolute, and the Shadow Garden's reach one link longer than it actually was.

Informant Two finished the noodles, paid in small coins, and walked home through the wet streets. They did not think about the Shadow. They thought about whether the landlord would raise the rent again.

Reader's Guide

Signature moments: None in the traditional sense. Their 'moment' is the quiet, unremarkable act of delivering or receiving a piece of low-grade information, which Cid mentally elevates into a grand act of shadow-warrior devotion.

Cid's perception vs. reality: This is the character's entire narrative function. Cid sees a devoted, hyper-competent operative who secretly weeps at the mere mention of 'Shadow.' The reality is a person doing a minor task for a paycheck, thinking about dinner.

First appearance and development: As a minor/background figure, Informant Two does not undergo a character arc. Their 'development' is entirely external—Cid's mythology grows around them while they remain static. They appear in the early volumes as part of the Shadow Garden's founding structure and fade back into the background.
