The Cult of Diablos exists in a state of perpetual cognitive dissonance. To Cid, it is the grand, shadowy cabal he has always envisioned in his daydreams—a network of elite operatives answering to a mysterious, all-powerful leader called Shadow. To the members themselves, it is the Shadow Garden, a real and dangerous organization that has saved their lives, given them purpose, and placed them under the command of someone who seems to know every secret, predict every move, and wield power they cannot fathom. Neither side knows the other's truth, and the gap between those two narratives is the engine of the entire story.

Member One occupies a symbolic position: the first recruit, the first bond forged in the dark. In Cid's mind, this was the moment his fantasy became flesh. In the member's mind, it was the moment they found a cause worth bleeding for. The irony is that the 'cause' was a teenager's elaborate roleplay, and the 'cause' they found was, in fact, a genuine force for good that Cid stumbles toward by accident and instinct. The loyalty is real even if the premise is a lie, and that paradox is what makes the Shadow Garden one of the most beloved ensembles in the series.

Operationally, each member brings a distinct combat specialty—blades, firearms, magic, engineering, infiltration—so that the organization functions as a complete tactical unit. Member One, as the earliest in the roster, often serves as the point of contact for lower-tier agents and the first name spoken when Shadow issues a directive. Their bond to the leader is the oldest, the deepest, and the most quietly devoted, even if they will never know that the person they revere is, in his own heart, just as lost and lonely as they are.

In Their Own Story

The safehouse smelled of cold coffee and gun oil. Member One stood at the window, watching the rain stitch the city into grey threads, and waited for the message. It always came the same way—a scrap of paper slid under the door, no signature, only a single word written in that impossibly elegant hand: *Move.*

They didn't question it. They never did. In three years of service, Shadow had never been wrong, never been late, never once shown a face. The myth was the man. The man was the myth. And Member One, who had once been nothing but a name on a wanted list in a country that no longer existed, would trade every remaining year of their life to read another line in that hand.

They picked up the radio. 'Shadow Garden, all stations. The Eminence has spoken. We move at the third bell.' A pause. Then, from a dozen buried channels, a chorus of voices: *Acknowledged.*

Outside, the rain kept falling, and somewhere in a narrow apartment with a cardboard box of unopened mail on the desk, a young man in a bathrobe muttered, 'I hope they don't take the third bell literally,' and poured himself another cup of coffee.

Reader's Guide

Role in the story: Member One is the foundational operative of the Cult of Diablos, the first person Cid recruited into his self-constructed shadow organization. They serve as the organizational anchor—the one who coordinates field teams, relays Shadow's (Cid's) directives, and maintains the operational security that keeps the Shadow Garden hidden from the world's governments and secret societies.

Personality: Steady, laconic, and fiercely loyal. Member One speaks little but observes everything, and their devotion to Shadow is absolute, rooted in the genuine belief that they serve the most powerful being on the continent. They are the calm center of the Garden's chaos, the one who files reports, locks the vault, and makes sure the others eat.

Key relationships: Their bond with Shadow is the oldest and most sacred in the organization. They hold a quiet, protective regard for the newer members (the later Greek-letter operatives) and treat them as younger siblings who stumbled into a war they didn't choose. Their relationship with Cid-as-himself is, of course, nonexistent—he does not know they exist outside his fantasy.

Signature moments: The first recruitment scene, where Cid, in full 'Shadow' voice, extends the offer and Member One accepts without hesitation. Subsequent scenes where Member One executes a complex multi-city operation flawlessly, only for Cid to internally narrate it as 'of course, I planned that.'

The Cid gap: Cid perceives Member One as a devoted, powerful lieutenant in his epic saga. Member One perceives Cid as an incomprehensible god-king. The truth is a lonely teenager and a broken person who found family in a lie. Neither perception is wrong; both are incomplete.

First appearance: Member One is introduced in the early volumes of the light novel series, during Cid's initial construction of the Shadow Garden. Their character development is gradual—less about power-ups and more about deepening trust and the slow, aching suspicion that their leader might be human after all.
