Each member is assigned a Greek-letter codename—Alpha through Eta—and is expected to carry out covert operations, intelligence gathering, and combat missions across the political landscape of the continent. Cid designs every recruitment as a cinematic set-piece, often involving elaborate stunts, dramatic rescues, or staged confrontations that the recruit experiences as a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with a legendary figure.

Recruit Two, designated Beta, enters the Court as a noblewoman of considerable social standing. Her recruitment is one of Cid's early and defining set-pieces: he engineers a scenario in which she is placed in apparent mortal danger, only for the Shadow Monarch to appear in a burst of theatrical flair and save her. The moment is designed to be awe-inspiring, and it works. She swears her allegiance to the Shadow Monarch, unaware that the larger-than-life figure she reveres is, in Cid's own mind, a role he is playing for the sake of his personal narrative.

In Their Own Story

The rain had not stopped for three days when the carriage wheels crunched over the cobblestones of the lower quarter. Inside, a young noblewoman clutched her cloak tighter, the scent of wet wool and iron filling the small cabin. She had been followed for two blocks. The footsteps behind her were patient, deliberate.

Then the alley mouth exploded in a flash of violet light.

A figure stood at the end of the narrow street, coat billowing as though caught in a wind that touched nothing else. Rain slid off the brim of a wide hat. The figure raised one hand, and the pursuing blade that had been inches from the noblewoman's neck shattered into a dozen glittering fragments on the wet stone.

"You are under the protection of the Shadow Monarch," the figure said, voice low and resonant, as though speaking from the bottom of a well. "Step into my carriage, and the night ends here."

The noblewoman's knees buckled. She did not ask how he knew her name. She did not ask how he had known she was in danger. She simply stepped out, and the rain finally broke.
