Ragna is a warrior defined by steel and silence. Before her encounter with the so-called Eminence in Shadow, she carried a personal code of loyalty that was shattered by betrayal—leaving her adrift, skilled but purposeless. Her swordsmanship is not flashy; it is efficient, brutal, and honed through years of real combat rather than arcane training. Where other Shadow Court members lean on magic, technology, or cunning, Ragna's power is the most physical and immediate: a blade that ends threats before they fully form.

Her recruitment follows the now-familiar Shadow Court pattern. Cid appears at the precise moment she needs an ally, delivers a line he has rehearsed in his head, and walks away before she can question him. Ragna, desperate for a cause and already primed to believe in the legend, fills in every gap with the mythology she has heard whispered about. She does not know Cid is a reformed chuunibyou teenager from another world. She knows only that the Eminence in Shadow saw her at her lowest and offered a hand. That is enough.

Within the Shadow Court, Ragna occupies a role that grounds the group's more eccentric members. She is the one who checks her blade before a mission, who speaks in short sentences, and who quietly fixes the tactical blind spots that the more dramatic members overlook. Cid, in his head, regards her as 'Rho, my trusted blade in the darkness,' and has already written three internal monologues about their future battles together. She has no idea any of this is happening.

In Their Own Story

The rain came in sheets that turned the alley into a river of grey. Ragna knelt in the muck, her left arm hanging wrong, the edge of her blade still warm with someone else's blood. Three of them had come. She had put two down. The third was still out there, breathing, counting her seconds.

She did not hear the footsteps. That was the problem. She never heard the footsteps.

A hand closed around the hilt of her sword—not to take it, but to steady it. A voice, low and flat, said something she would later reconstruct as: 'You have fought well for a woman with no one to fight for.'

The third attacker was gone. Not dead, exactly. Simply… absent. As if the air had swallowed him.

Ragna looked up. The figure was already turning, cloak catching the rain, silhouette dissolving into the dark between the buildings. No face. No name. Just the faintest trace of a scent—ink and cold iron.

She straightened. Wiped her blade on her coat. And for the first time in months, she did not feel the hollow space where her purpose used to be.

She followed the rain into the dark, and did not look back.

Reader's Guide

The arc opens with Ragna in a state of isolation and physical danger, her former loyalties having been broken. Cid, on a self-imposed 'patrol' of the city (which he narrates to himself as a shadowy vigilante's rounds), stumbles into the situation and intervenes with a single, perfectly timed action he later credits to 'the will of the Eminence.' In reality, he tripped, grabbed her sword to steady himself, and the attacker panicked. Ragna, half-conscious and desperate, interprets this as the legendary figure she has heard rumors about.

The middle of the arc focuses on Ragna's integration into the Shadow Court's base. She is wary, terse, and initially refuses to trust the other members. Cid, in his head, is composing a grand welcome speech. In reality, he hands her a cup of tea and mumbles something about 'the organization' while avoiding eye contact. The other Shadow Court members—particularly the more theatrical ones—try to bond with her, and she responds with one-word answers. A small, genuine connection forms when a younger member shares a meal with her and she, for the first time, smiles.

The arc closes with a joint Shadow Court operation that tests Ragna's new loyalty. She fights alongside the group, and Cid—watching from a rooftop, narrating his own 'strategic brilliance'—feels a flicker of something that is almost, but not quite, pride. Ragna returns to the base and says, 'I will not let you down.' Cid internally writes a four-paragraph speech thanking her. Out loud, he says, 'Cool, cool, see ya.'

The arc advances the broader story by adding a martial specialist to the Court's roster and deepening the theme of found family replacing broken oaths. It also reinforces the central comedy: Cid's delusional self-image versus his actual social awkwardness. In the anime adaptation, the arc is condensed compared to the light novel, with some of Ragna's backstory exposition trimmed for pacing. The manga follows the novel more closely but reorders a few action beats for visual impact.
