They gather intelligence, stage the crisis, and ensure the Mysterious Stranger arrives at precisely the right beat. He did not turn. He set the cup down, aligned it parallel to the table's edge, and only then lifted his eyes over his shoulder. The assassin's sword was two inches from the barkeep's throat. 'You're standing in my light,' the Stranger said, in a tone that suggested mild inconvenience. The assassin blinked. By the time the next thought formed, the blade was on the floor, the assassin was on the floor, and the Stranger was already walking toward the door, his coat brushing the frame. The barkeep stared at the empty doorway, then at the ale, which was somehow no longer lukewarm. Outside, the rain had stopped. It had not stopped when he entered. No one would ever be able to prove otherwise.
