In Cid's internal narrative, the Shadow Garden is the secret fortress of a shadowy organization that has operated in the margins of every nation for centuries, dismantling criminal syndicates and corrupt governments before they can consolidate power. The training grounds are, in his telling, hallowed ground where generations of operatives have sharpened their blades and perfected the 'Shadow Garden' fighting doctrine. He speaks of them with the reverence of a priest describing a cathedral, complete with invented histories, legendary predecessors, and solemn oaths.

The reader, however, knows the truth: the base is a well-furnished hidden estate in a remote area, and the 'generations of operatives' are the seven young adults who currently share the kitchen. The 'centuries-old doctrine' is a combat style Cid cobbled together from action-manga panels and his own imagination, which he then performs with such earnest conviction that his subordinates—each of them far more powerful than he could ever be—genuinely struggle to find a flaw. The training grounds, then, exist in the fertile gap between Cid's delusion and the Seven Shadows' willingness to indulge him, a space where absurdity and genuine affection coexist.

Over the course of the story, the grounds shift from a purely comedic setting to something more emotionally resonant. The Seven Shadows begin to treat the base as a true home, and Cid—without ever realizing it—becomes the person who holds them together. The training sessions, still punctuated by Cid's dramatic monologues and over-the-top finishing poses, become the ritual that reaffirms their bond. The afternoon light slants through the high windows of the training hall, catching dust motes that drift like slow snow. Cid stands at the center of the polished floor, arms spread wide, and declares—without looking at any of them—that the 'Seventh Form of the Shadow Garden' requires the practitioner to 'feel the void between heartbeats.' Gamma, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed, blinks. Delta, sitting cross-legged on a bench, quietly takes a bite of apple. Ciel, passing behind them with a tray of tea, offers a small, exhausted smile to no one in particular.

Cid, meanwhile, is mid-spin. His hair whips. His eyes glow with the particular intensity of a man who has rehearsed this monologue in the mirror. He lands in a crouch, one fist extended, and the air around it shimmers with what he is absolutely certain is a 'shadow pressure wave.' It is, in fact, a very good breeze from an open window.

'...Impressive,' Riko says, and means it, because she always means it, because the man in the crouched pose saved her life in a way he will never know and she will never explain. Cid straightens, beaming, and announces that tomorrow's drill will focus on 'the Void Step, Third Iteration.' The Seven Shadows nod. They always nod. And the light keeps falling, golden and ordinary, over the floor where a delusional man trains a family of gods, and none of them—least of all him—realizes how extraordinary the quiet is.

Reader's Guide

The Shadow Garden base is a multi-level hidden estate tucked into a remote, forested area, accessible only through concealed passages that Cid describes (in his head) as 'ancient shadow corridors.' The training grounds occupy the largest open space within the complex: a wide, high-ceilinged hall with a smooth, hard floor suitable for sparring, flanked by weapon racks, padded walls, and a series of practice dummies that Cid has personally named and given backstories.

Adjacent to the training hall are the living quarters—kitchen (Ciel's domain, always immaculate), a common dining area where the Seven Shadows gather, and individual rooms for each member. A small 'operations room' exists, which Cid uses for his elaborate 'mission briefings' that are, in reality, just him reading news reports and narrating them as if he is the hidden hand behind every event.

Narratively, the grounds are the anchor point for the ensemble cast. Every major character in the Seven Shadows is tied to the space: Ciel cooks and manages, Delta and Gamma spar and bicker, Riko meditates and smiles, Nereus reads, Alpha and Beta train in tandem. Cid orbits the center of it all, performing his 'Shadow Garden' forms with theatrical gravity.

The duality of the space is the engine of the comedy and the heart of the drama. To Cid, it is a legendary fortress. To the reader, it is a cozy home. To the Seven Shadows, it is both—and neither—and the place where they are, for the first time in their lives, simply a group of people who chose each other. The in-universe 'lore' Cid attaches to the grounds (centuries of shadow operatives, sacred oaths, the 'Garden's' founding myth) is entirely fabricated, yet the emotional truth he stumbles toward is real: this place matters because the people in it matter to each other.
