The Underground Base sits at the heart of the Shadow Garden's operations in the modern world. Cid designed and oversaw its construction, and in his mind it is the physical manifestation of a decades-long shadow war against global evil. In reality, it is a remarkably well-appointed subterranean complex—spacious, clean, and stocked with books, training equipment, and modern amenities—that Cid built because he genuinely wanted a cool secret lair and then filled it with people who were thrilled to serve him.

The base is where the Shadow Garden members live, train, and conduct their covert operations. It is the site of their weekly gatherings, their meals, and the quiet moments of camaraderie that define their group dynamic. For Cid, every room carries the weight of 'legendary' history; for his subordinates, it is simply home, the place where their mysterious and brilliant leader keeps them safe and pointed toward justice.

Narratively, the base serves as the story's 'home base' contrast. While the fantasy-world arcs take place in sprawling castles and battlefields, the Underground Base grounds the series in something almost cozy: a group of skilled, devoted people sharing a kitchen and a library under the earth, orbiting a leader who is simultaneously the most delusional and the most genuinely capable person in the room.

In Their Own Story

The fluorescent lights hummed in a low, almost musical tone as Cid descended the final staircase, a half-empty bottle of sake tucked under one arm. The main hall was quiet—Gamma had already left for her evening patrol, and the soft clink of dishes from the kitchen meant Delta and Epsilon were still at the table. He paused at the top of the stairs, listening to the murmur of their voices, the distant drip of a faucet, the faint scratch of a pen as Zeta worked at the library desk on the next level down.

'You're late,' Delta called without looking up, sliding a plate of rice and grilled fish toward an empty chair. 'Sit. Eat. You look like you've been arguing with a wall.'

Cid smiled, set the sake on the table, and sat. The walls, of course, had been perfectly reasonable. It was the *concept* of the walls that had been unreasonable. He picked up his chopsticks. The base hummed around him, warm and alive, and for a moment the Shadow Monarch was just a guy eating dinner with his people, three floors below the street.

The in-universe lore Cid attaches to the place—'the Shadow Monarch's sanctum,' 'the Hall of a Thousand Schemes'—is almost entirely self-authored, and the members, to their credit, never correct him.
